In a meteoric rise from PDA standout to professional striker, Riley Tiernan has become one of the most electrifying stories in the NWSL this season. A former Players Development Academy prodigy and Rutgers legend, Tiernan has turned heads in her rookie year with Angel City FC, delivering clutch goals, commanding minutes, and earning U-23 national team honors.

Riley Tiernan is having a moment — and it’s one the entire PDA community is watching with pride. So far in her rookie season with Angel City FC, Tiernan has emerged as a breakout star in the NWSL, scoring eight goals and earning Rookie of the Month honors in April and May. She just recently got a Player of the Month and Goal of the Month award too.

For those who know her roots, this rise isn’t a surprise — it’s the natural evolution of a player shaped by years of elite training at New Jersey’s Players Development Academy and Rutgers University.

She joined PDA early, following in the footsteps of her she turned to her older sister Madison — current PDA Blue ECNL coach and a former pro herself — and quickly distinguishing herself as a fierce competitor with a team-first mentality.

That early start at PDA gave Tiernan years of high-level training, mentorship, and exposure to elite competition — preparing her not only for collegiate success at Rutgers, but now, for the professional stage.

It’s the PDA way: develop complete players who thrive under pressure, adapt to the game’s highest levels, and lead by example.

She went on to Rutgers, where she rewrote the record books: leaving as the program’s all-time assist leader with 34 helpers in 83 games, sixth in Big Ten history.

Her professional break came when Angel City invited Tiernan as a non-roster trialist for the 2025 preseason. After impressing the coaching staff, she signed her first pro contract on March 3, 2025, and started every match thereafter!

When Angel City’s technical director, Mark Wilson, spoke to the Los Angeles Times earlier in the season, he said ACFC identified her as “a top, top target” early on, citing not just her skill but also her character as a deciding factor for inviting her to training camp. Coaches and fans recognized that Riley doesn’t just occupy space—she creates it, floats past defenders, and constantly pushes boundaries.

As Riley Tiernan continues to rise, her goals are crystal clear.

“I just want to keep playing the best I can for the team,” she told AngelCity.com. “Working hard, not settling for the bare minimum — and win a championship. That’s the main goal.”

It has been a tremendous start to her professional career, with 19 games, 19 starts, 8 goals, 1 assist, 2 NWSL Rookie of the Month Awards, 1 NWSL Player of the Week Award, 1 NWSL Goal of the Week Award, and a U-23 U.S. Women’s National Team call-up for camp in June. But Tiernan and ACFC are still pushing to make the playoffs, with 7 games to go in the NWSL regular season, the goal to win a championship is still insight.

Riley Tiernan has written a breakout rookie chapter that Angel City and PDA alumni can proudly share. As the season unfolds, all eyes will remain fixed on No. 33—poised not just to compete, but to lead.
